Abstract
The management of vehicular traffic poses a significant challenge in cities worldwide, as it involves the control of traffic lights and traffic flow. The specific issue lies in the configuration of traffic lights with fixed-time allocations, not in line with the time required by real traffic flow. The aim of this study is to propose an intelligent system for real-time management of traffic lights at an intersection, which adjusts to the actual traffic conditions, namely speed and vehicle density. To achieve this, a heuristic algorithm was developed, considering traffic characteristics and making decisions to allocate the corresponding phase time. Experimental tests with 15,000 simulated scenarios allowed for the estimation of waiting time between signal cycles. The results demonstrated an 18.3% reduction in cycle time with an improvement of 47 cycles/hour compared to the 39 cycles/hour of a traditional traffic light with fixed phase times.
