Abstract

Introduction: The association between the implementation of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) and clinical cure was evaluated in hospitalized patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Hospital III EsSalud-Chimbote, including a cohort of 18 patients not exposed to the ASP and 34 exposed patients. The overall clinical cure rate was 86.5%. In the multivariable model using Firth's penalized logistic regression, the ASP was not associated with clinical cure, with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of 0.37 (95% CI: 0.03–2.35; p=0.309). Female sex was associated with a higher likelihood of clinical cure, with an aOR of 7.32 (95% CI: 1.39–51.96; p=0.019). In conclusion, exposure to the ASP was not significantly associated with clinical cure in hospitalized patients with UTI caused by ESBL-producing E. coli.
