Abstract

Introduction: The knowledge society, strengthened by connectivity, proposes as a challenge for the teacher to develop in students skills for the construction of knowledge and the progressive strengthening of cognitive autonomy. The present descriptive research sought to determine the level of scientific literacy in students of education majors at the Universidad Nacional del Santa-Peru. Methodology: The descriptive study determined the application of a questionnaire with four dimensions and 20 items to a population of 280 students. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and factor analysis. Results: The results showed that 60% of the students presented a basic level of scientific literacy, 25% an intermediate level and 15% an advanced level. Discussion: Weaknesses were identified in the understanding of scientific concepts and the application of science in everyday life. The findings suggest that scientific literacy is an area that requires attention in the training of future teaching professionals. Conclusions: the research revealed a level of scientific literacy that must be improved; Strategies must be implemented to promote the understanding and application of science in everyday life.
